Urania’s Children

One of the things I get really excited about is seeing people take action, by which I mean acting upon a passion, and bringing it to life.

I first met Winder through Anatome, a wonderful modern apothecary and lifestyle brand who really supported Japonisme in the beginning, by stocking my book in their stores.

Back in March 2020, I hosted a talk event there, and Winder was one of the nutritionists on staff who took care of me on the night. We kept on running into each other after that, on nights out or just out and about in East London.

He’s recently launched a genderfluid fragrance line of his own, Urania’s Children, of luxury perfumes produced in London.

There are three signature scents to the collection so far - Lance, Mandorla and Queer Magic.

Perfume is something so inherently personal, and I always need to try before I buy. I've often loved a fragrance on the someone else, but have found it doesn’t quite work for me - so I purchased one of the Discovery Sets - three travel sized perfumes, so you can sample them to see what you like.

I've also recently blended my own, following one of Winder’s workshops, using Queer Magic as a base.

I embellished it with rose, cardamom, lemon and cinnamon, and found that I've won it every day since.

It's pride month, and a lot of questionable corporates use it to - get promote their own agendas. Instead, think its important to highlight and support queer-owned independent businesses like Winder’s, to support them so they thrive.

I think its incredibly inspiring to see what Winder has done - to find a gap in the market where he didn’t fill himself represented, and to put in the work to create and found a way to fulfill and address an industry that is often incredibly archaic in their approach.

You can find out more about Urania’s Children here & here, or find them in various boutiques throughout London - and even at Liberty’s!
